SUSTAINABLE DESIGN FOR A SMALL BATHROOM
Project overview
This project was designed for a client who spends her summers at the beach, and is deeply conscious about the environment. It began with a single tile—leftover from a family member's renovation—which inspired the materials selected for this small bathroom design. Our client was eager to learn about every product and material, understanding why each choice was sustainable. Budget and aesthetic were also important, and the final design struck the perfect balance of beauty, function, and environmental responsibility. This bathroom flows perfectly with the nautical-inspired home and our client was thrilled with the final outcome.

Sustainable elements
Reused Floor Tile – The design started with leftover tile, minimizing waste and giving it new life.
LEED-Certified Shower Tile – Contains recycled content, reducing environmental impact.
WaterSense Plumbing Fixtures – Use less water than traditional fixtures without compromising performance.
Eco-Friendly Accessories – All items were either crafted from natural or recycled materials, handcrafted by local artisans, or repurposed from other areas in the home.
“It all started with a few packages of repurposed floor tiles lying around our home and a desperate need for a bathroom update. We were encouraged to have Alexandra Shield (a long time family friend) look at our bathroom and hopefully present us with some ideas. We loved that Alex has taken a different approach to interior design by being a Sustainable Interior Designer, as this was also right up our alley! After receiving 2 designs, we knew she was the right person for the job. Alexandra is very professional, always replies to many questions and is able to easily work through ideas. She cares deeply about the importance of living life sustainably and really took the time to listen to our needs and requirements. She even incorporated a style she knew we’d love, due to our Nautical obsession. Our Nautical love is now displayed in a gorgeous backsplash that reminds us daily of beach days and sea glass.
