This project was to create a safe, healthy, neutral nursery (we didn’t know the sex of the baby!). Every material and product was carefully selected to ensure low-toxicity, durability, and sustainability, creating a space that supports both the child’s well-being as well as the environment. The result is a cozy, serene nursery that balances comfort, style, and eco-conscious living, giving the family peace of mind while welcoming their little one.

This nursery was a deeply personal project for me, as it was designed for my own baby. As I learned more and more about toxic chemicals that can be found in common materials and furnishings and their associated health risks, I realized how challenging it can be to create a truly safe and healthy space. Every product and material used for this project was carefully researched and chosen for health, durability, and environmental responsibility.
This project also made me realize that I can’t be the only mom who wants a healthy home for her children, and it inspired the launch of my own design firm, Alex Shield Design. Combining over 10 years of interior design experience with a passion for sustainability, I now help families create homes that are beautiful, functional and most importantly, healthy —spaces that bring you joy and peace of mind.
